Two journalists covering the mire in Afghanistan have been killed in a shelling attack. Their US National Public Radio colleague, Ali Shapiro, described photo-journalist David Gilkey as having “a slow, gentle energy”. He died alongside Zabihullah Tamanna, his photographic journalist translator.
